PhD Position in Tectonics available
We have an opening for a PhD position studying the tectonics of the Alps. The project forms part of the German Priority Program 4D-MB: Mountain Building Processes in 4-Dimensions and will explore how processes of the mantle, crust and surface interact to form moutains during the collision of tectonic plates. You will work in a consortium of 22 interdisciplinary projects (

A few weeks ago a group of 4th graders from the KGS Hanbruch primary school visited us and spent an exciting morning learning about moving plates, looking into micro and nano structure of rocks at the SEM and creating their own small faults in the analogue lab.

Time scale bias in erosion rates of glaciated landscapes - New paper in Science Advances
Pleistocene climatic cooling and the onset of glaciations did not necessarily lead to a global increase in erosion rates. Instead, erosion rate estimates in glaciated landscapes may be affected by a systematic averaging bias that produces higher estimated erosion rates toward the present, which do not reflect straightforward changes in erosion rates through time. New paper in Geology just published
Origin and time evolution of subduction polarity reversal from plate kinematics of Southeast Asia
We found a now extinct ocean controls plate kinematics of Southeast Asia and architecture of the Taiwan mountain belt. Subduction of this old ocean more than 30 million years ago is responsible for Eurasia being overridden by the Philippine Sea Plate at present. This discovery is a prerequisite for correctly assessing the earthquake hazard potential of the region. Check out the full publication here:

Prof. Stephen Cox from the Research School of Earth Sciences (
RSES) at the Australian National University (
ANU) in Canberra will spend a six month sabbatical with us. Stephen plans to start in early August. He'll be working on the
FRACs-project and veins in general.
