PhD-thesis: Grain boundary structure in minerals and analogues during  recrystallization in the presence of a fluid phase


Abstract

The microscale distribution of geofluids affects the mechanical and transport properties of rocks under metamorphic conditions. During deformation the fluid distribution is complex. An example of this complexity can occur during grain boundary migration: fluids form interconnected films instead of isolated fluid inclusions that are in stable equilibrium under otherwise identical conditions.

The aim of this project is the investigation of the fluid containing migrating grain boundaries in order to obtain a set of microstructural criteria for the presence of fluid films. This will help to understand the processes that occur during dynamic recrystallization in the presence of fluids, i.e. the formation of mobile grain boundaries, fluid morphology during migration and the healing process.
The geometry of the fluids and their effect on the grain boundary migration rate will be examined with SEM in both experimentally and naturally recrystallized samples. In addition experiments will be performed in a transmitted-light deformation apparatus under a microscope with real-time in-situ observation in order to get an insight of the processes that occur during dynamic recrystallization.
