Welcome to the pages of the Naxos Excursion 2014!

Within the scope of geological education the GED department (Structural Geology - Tectonics - Geomechanics) of the RWTH Aachen University organizes stunning field trips every year.
At the end of the summer term 2014, MSc students of Applied Geosciences & Georesources Management went for a 7-day field trip to Naxos, the largest of the Cycladic islands, Greece. Divided into two groups of 15 students each we learned all about the tectonic evolution of the Aegean Sea with a special focus on the geology of Naxos, under the supervision of Prof. Janos L. Urai assisted by Dr. Christoph von Hagke, Arne Grobe, Michael Kettermann and Alexander Raith.

The island of Naxos features a famous so-called metamorphic core complex (MCC) and hence appeals with highly complex forming processes („marblehaft!“). The main rock types comprise marbles, schists and intrusive rocks, mostly brought to the surface by doming. Naxos’ MCC developed during crustal extension and is characterised by a migmatitic core. This core complex is mantled by metasedimentary rocks. Another highlight during this field trip was the obervation of a huge variety of boudinage structures, which have been studied in detail on this island.
