Grain fragmentation stresses in granular fault gouge

 
The core of most active faults consist of a granular material called "fault gouge". During fault movement this granular material evolves, in particluar grains are broken. Recently there has been some controversy regarding the details of the stress on fragmenting grains and therefore what the relevant material strength parameters are (confined compressive or Brazilian?).
The aim of the Project would be to run DEM Models of fault gouge, obtain the stress on fragmenting grains and use the data to try to decide the issue.
